Ireland has invested heavily in greenways, which are traffic-free routes on old railway lines and canal towpaths. E-bikes make the hills easy. Here are the best ways to explore by bike.
Greenways
The Waterford Greenway (46 km, Waterford to Dungarvan) and the Great Western Greenway in Mayo (Westport to Achill) are the stars. Closer to Dublin, the Royal Canal and Grand Canal greenways start in the city.
Guided bike tours
In Dublin, a bike tour covers the city’s history in a morning. In Howth, panoramic e-bike tours climb to cliff views over Dublin Bay. In Kilkenny, guided cycles take in the castle and medieval lanes. Kinsale has coast and country e-bike routes.
Killarney
A favourite day out: cycle through the Gap of Dunloe, then take a boat across the lakes back to Ross Castle with your bike on board.
Island cycling
On Inis Mór, bikes are the best way to get around. Cycle from the pier to Dún Aonghasa and the seal colony.
Tips: hire bikes come with helmets and locks. Book e-bikes ahead in summer, and check that your tour includes a rain jacket.
